Frenectomy Beaumont

A frenectomy, also called a frenulectomy or frenotomy, is a procedure that removes a frenulum, a small fold of tissue that can limit movement in the mouth. In dentistry, Dr. Hugh Saltaji may recommend a frenectomy to improve oral function, assist orthodontic treatment, or address tongue-tie (ankyloglossia). The procedure can involve either the upper lip (labial frenulum) or the underside of the tongue (lingual frenulum). A consultation is needed to determine if a frenectomy is appropriate.

Labial Frenectomy

A labial frenectomy involves removing the frenulum in the middle of the upper lip. It may be recommended if the upper lip restricts movement or contributes to spacing issues between the front teeth (diastema). Labial frenectomies are performed on patients of all ages, from infants and children to adults. Combining a labial frenectomy with orthodontic treatment can help maintain long-term alignment of the teeth and prevent gaps from returning.

Lingual Frenectomy

A lingual frenectomy is performed under the tongue to release a tight or short lingual frenulum. It may be recommended for patients with tongue-tie, which can affect speech, eating, oral hygiene, and breastfeeding in infants. A lingual frenectomy can improve tongue mobility, make speaking and eating easier, and help infants feed more effectively.

Reasons a Frenectomy May Be Recommended

Frenectomies may be suggested for several reasons, including:

  • Orthodontic Treatment: Prevents gaps between upper front teeth from returning after braces or other alignment treatments.
  • Tongue Mobility: Improves tongue movement when a tight or short frenulum restricts normal oral function.
  • Infant Feeding: Helps resolve tongue-tie issues that interfere with breastfeeding.

Procedure and Benefits

Frenectomy procedures are safe and minimally invasive. They can improve oral comfort, support proper tooth alignment, enhance tongue function, and help infants feed better. The type of frenectomy recommended depends on the location of the restrictive frenulum and the patient?s individual needs. A consultation is required to determine if the procedure is appropriate.
